Here you can read how to check your NOL card balance online, top it up through multiple digital and offline methods, activate pending credits, and manage different card types safely.

What Is a NOL Card?

A NOL Card is a contactless payment card that stores electronic credit used for public transport and selected services in Dubai. “NOL” means “fare” in Arabic.
With one card, you can travel anywhere in the city without carrying cash or paper tickets.

How to Check Your NOL Card Balance

The RTA offers several easy ways to check your balance. You can choose any method that suits you best.

Check NOL Balance on the RTA Website

  • Go to the official rta.ae portal
  • Click “Check NOL Balance”.
  • Enter your Tag ID printed on the back of your card.
  • You’ll instantly see your current balance, transaction history, and card expiry date.

Note: Online balance may take up to 48 hours to update after recent trips.

Check Balance by NOL Pay Mobile App

The nol Pay app received a major upgrade in November 2025, transforming
it from a simple balance checker into RTA’s official all-in-one digital wallet.
It is now the most powerful method for managing your NOL card.

How to check your balance:

  • Open the nol Pay app and sign in with your UAE Pass.
  • Tap Check Card Info.
  • Enter or scan your Tag ID — or tap your physical card against your phone
(NFC required) for an instant real-time read.
  • View your current balance, pending credit, and full trip history.

What else the upgraded app now does:

  • Buy travel passes on the go — no need to queue at a machine
  • Manage family NOL cards — apply for children’s cards, top up each one
    individually, all from one profile
  • Set automatic top-ups — choose a threshold balance and recharge amount;
    the app handles the rest
  • Receive low balance and card expiry alerts via push notification, SMS,
    or email
  • Shop and pay at partner retail outlets across Dubai
  • Earn and redeem loyalty rewards
  • Overcharge refunds are handled automatically — no manual claim needed
  • Linked with UAE Pass, KHDA, SANAD, GDRFA, and PayPal

This upgrade is also Phase 1 of RTA’s shift to Account Based Ticketing (ABT) — meaning your RTA account, not just your physical card, will
eventually hold your balance and travel history across all devices.

Check NOL Card Balance via SMS

No internet? No problem. The SMS method works on any mobile phone —
but there is a registration step most guides skip.

Step 1 — Register your card (first time only):

  1. Open your SMS app.
  2. Type your 14-digit NOL Tag ID (printed on the back of the card).
  3. Send it to 511.
  4. You will receive a confirmation that your card is now linked to your number.

Step 2 — Check your balance:

  1. Type BAL in a new SMS.
  2. Send to 511.
  3. You receive your current balance and recent transaction history instantly.

Note: If you skip Step 1 and send BAL directly, you will get no response
or an error. Registration is a one-time requirement per card.

Use Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs)

Every metro and major bus station has vending machines. Simply insert your card, select “Check Balance,” and view the amount on the screen.

Visit an Authorized Retailer

Many RTA partner shops, including ZOOM, ENOC/EPPCO, and select stores, can check your balance using NOL readers. Just hand over your card to the cashier.

Ask at Customer Service Centers

If you prefer in-person help, visit an RTA Customer Happiness Center or metro ticket office. Staff can print your balance and explain any issues or recent deductions.

How to Top Up Your NOL Card

You can recharge NOL card balance both online and offline. Here’s how to do it quickly.

Online Top-Up Options

  • RTA Website: Enter your Tag ID and add funds using a debit or credit card.
  • NOL Pay App: Pay through the app and activate instantly via NFC.
  • S’hail App: Log in and choose “Top Up NOL Card.”
  • Banking Apps: Emirates NBD and Emirates Islamic offer auto top-up options linked to your credit card.
  • PayPal: Following RTA’s November 2025 partnership, you can now top up
your NOL card using PayPal through the nol Pay app. Link your PayPal
account inside the app under Payment Methods, then top up as normal.

Setting Up Auto Top-Up

If you use the metro daily and your balance runs low at the worst times,
the auto top-up feature in the nol Pay app solves that permanently.

How to set it up:

  • Open the nol Pay app and go to Auto Top-Up.
  • Set a minimum threshold — for example, AED 15. When your balance
drops below this, the top-up triggers automatically.
  • Choose a top-up amount (e.g., AED 50 or AED 100).
  • Select your payment method — credit/debit card, PayPal, or account balance.
  • Save. The app handles every recharge from that point forward.

You can set separate auto top-up rules for each family member’s card.
No more manual recharges, no more gate rejections.

Offline Top-Up Options

  • Ticket Vending Machines: Accept cash or cards; minimum top-up AED 20.
  • Ticket Office Counters: Add AED 50 or more at metro stations.
  • Solar Top-Up Machines: Found at bus stops for cash top-ups.
  • Retail Stores: Recharge at ZOOM or ENOC stations.

Managing NOL Cards for Your Family

The nol Pay app now lets you manage every family member’s NOL card
from a single profile — no separate logins, no separate top-ups.

What you can do:

  • Apply for a Personal (Blue) Card for your child directly in the app —
no documents required, just UAE Pass login
  • Link existing family cards to your profile
  • View all card balances in one dashboard
  • Top up each card individually with different amounts
  • Set separate auto top-up rules per card
  • Deactivate or block a family card instantly if lost

Who this is for:
Parents, guardians, and households where multiple people use public transport
daily. Students in the household benefit from the 50% fare discount on the
Blue Card, which you can apply for on their behalf directly from the app.

Note: Only Personal (Blue) Cards can be linked to a family profile.
Standard Silver or Gold cards cannot be added to another person’s account.

Important Instruction: Activating Pending Credit

If you recharge online, the credit stays “pending” until activated.
To activate:

  • Tap your card at a metro gate, bus validator, or parking meter.
  • You can also use the NOL Pay app (via NFC).

Activation usually takes 45 minutes to 4 hours after payment.

NOL Top-Up Processing Time

When you top up your NOL card online or via mobile apps, the added balance may appear as “pending” until it is activated. Activation usually takes 45 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the payment method and network load.

Pending balances ensure security and prevent accidental double usage. Always check your balance after a few hours to confirm the top-up.

NOL Card Expiry & Renewal Process

NOL cards have a validity period, typically 5 years for Silver and Gold cards. To check your card’s expiry:

  • Look at the date printed on the card
  • Use the NOL Pay app or RTA website

For expired or damaged cards:

  • Visit a metro ticket office or Customer Happiness Center
  • Transfer your balance to a new card (if registered)
  • Replace the card for a small fee (usually AED 70 for personalized cards)

Registering your card helps recover balance during replacement and ensures smooth travel.

Pending credit means money that you’ve added online but haven’t activated yet by tapping your card. It’s a built-in security measure to keep your balance safe.

Digital NOL Cards (NFC on Phones)

Dubai supports digital NOL cards for contactless travel using smartphones.

  • Samsung users: Digitize your NOL card via the nol Pay app.
Your phone replaces the physical card at metro gates and retail outlets.
  • Huawei users: Add your NOL card through Huawei Wallet or the nol Pay app.
  • iPhone users: The NOL card cannot be added to Apple Wallet natively
as of 2026 — RTA’s digital card partnership currently covers Samsung only.
However, iPhone users can use the nol Pay app to check balance via NFC,
top up using Apple Pay, view transaction history, and manage their card
fully. Your physical card continues to work normally.

RTA confirmed it is coordinating with Apple to activate native Apple Wallet
support. No launch date has been announced as of June 2026.

Troubleshooting Guide: NOL Card Balance Issue

Even though the NOL card system is reliable, you might face small issues with balance, activation, or card usage. Here’s how to fix them step by step.

 Pending Not Showing on Card

Tap your NOL Card at any Dubai Metro gate, bus validator, or parking meter within 45 minutes to 4 hours after recharging. This will activate the pending balance instantly. If it still doesn’t appear, use the Nol Pay app to refresh or contact RTA support (800 9090).

Card Not Tapping at Metro or Bus Gate

Check your card balance online or via the Nol Pay app. If the balance is fine but it still doesn’t work, clean the card surface and try another gate. For expired or damaged cards, visit the nearest RTA Customer Happiness Center for a quick replacement (AED 70 for personalized cards).

NOL App Not Showing Updated Balance

Close and reopen the app, then tap your card using NFC on your phone to refresh balance instantly. Ensure you’re connected to the internet. If the issue persists, clear app cache or reinstall the app — it won’t affect your card data.

Card Not Accept Retail or Parking Machines

Ensure your balance is above AED 15 before making non-transport payments. Also, check that the merchant or parking meter supports RTA NOL transactions — look for the NOL logo near the payment terminal.

Double Deduction or Incorrect Fare

Check your transaction history in the Nol Pay app or website. If a duplicate charge appears, file a fare dispute through the RTA Customer Happiness Center or call 800 9090. Refunds are usually issued within 5–7 working days after verification.

Balance Deducted But Gate Didn’t Open

Always make sure you hear a beep and see a green light when tapping in and out. If your balance was wrongly deducted, report it within 48 hours using the RTA website or at any ticket office. The team usually resolves it within 4 working days.

Check your balance before every trip.

Keep at least AED 15–30 for metro access.

FAQs

You can check your NOL card balance through six methods: visit the RTA website and enter your card’s tag ID, use the NOL Pay mobile app, send “Bal” to SMS 511, insert your card into metro ticket vending machines, check at authorized retail outlets with NOL readers, or visit RTA customer service centers. The online methods display current balance, transaction history, and expiry date instantly

A minimum balance of AED 7.50 is required to enter the metro system. Silver NOL cardholders need at least AED 15, while Gold NOL cardholders require AED 30 to start a journey. The RTA recommends maintaining at least AED 15 on your card to cover round-trip metro travel.

Anonymous Silver and Gold NOL cards can hold a maximum balance of AED 1,000, while registered (personalized) cards linked to your Emirates ID can store up to AED 5,000. Blue (Personal) NOL cards for students and seniors have a maximum balance limit of AED 5,000, while NOL Salik cards can hold up to AED 500.

You can only recover your balance if you have a registered NOL card linked to your Emirates ID or a Blue (Personal) card. Immediately call RTA at 800 9090 to block your lost card, then apply for a refund through the RTA website, Nol Pay app, or customer service centers. Anonymous (unregistered) Silver and Gold cards cannot be recovered if lost.

Online top-ups create “pending credits” that require activation by tapping your card at validation points within 45 minutes to 4 hours. Your card must be tapped at metro gates, bus validators, tram stations, parking meters, solar top-up machines, or through the Nol Pay app’s NFC feature to transfer the pending amount to your physical card.

If your balance drops below the minimum required during your journey, you’ll need to top up at the destination station before exiting. Visit ticket vending machines at any metro or bus station for immediate recharge (minimum AED 20), use the Nol Pay app for instant top-up if you have an NFC-enabled phone, or approach ticket office counters for assistance. Always maintain at least AED 15-30 balance to avoid journey disruptions.

The RTA NOL Card makes life easier for anyone traveling in Dubai. Whether you ride the metro daily or visit occasionally, managing your NOL balance ensures hassle-free, cashless travel.
By registering your card, using digital tools, and keeping your balance topped up, you can enjoy Dubai’s world-class transport system with total confidence.
